Our Story

The Open Book was created to be an inclusive hub for book lovers and collectors alike. It is a true small business that began in Simi Valley in 2006, founded by owner Greg Schwabe as an extension of his company, Schwabe Books. Thanks to a renewed interest in reading and a growing passion for owning physical media in an ever-dwindling digital landscape where films and music can easily disappear, we have grown from a humble single-store operation into five thriving locations. These locations include Woodland Hills, Northridge, Pasadena, and Thousand Oaks.

We offer a handpicked selection of rare, unusual, and hard-to-find books. Our collection ranges from titles dating back to the 1800s, and sometimes even earlier, to the latest releases that BookTok fans are obsessed with. We also carry a wide variety of media such as CDs, vinyl records, 4K Blu-rays, and classic clamshell VHS tapes. Collectors and thrifters can also explore our curated assortment of jewelry, antiques, and collectibles, including sterling silver pieces, and rare Star Wars and Disney memorabilia.

Each location specializes in different items, and many of our customers enjoy “store hopping” to experience the unique character and atmosphere of every branch. This variety also extends to our popular community events, which include trivia nights, book bedazzling sessions, crafting projects, and more. No matter which location you visit, each one is dedicated to building a welcoming third-space environment for everyone.

Folks are reading again, and here at The Open Book, we are always ready to help you find your next favorite read.
